Chennai Express - Trailer Trash Talk

Varun: When I saw the poster, I don't know why it felt like Deepika’s a bigger star than Shah Rukh. Maybe he's not been there for a while. Also could be for these reasons Deepika’s doing some decent work in the recent past.

Watched the trailer, typical Rohit Shetty. Definitely again, taking Rohit Shetty’s name, Rohit Shetty is the bigger star in this one. Shah Rukh is of least importance here. Looks like an entertaining movie for all the Shetty fans.

Lalit: Just watched the trailer. And you are 100% correct - it's a movie for Shetty fans. As soon as I saw Shetty's name at the beginning of the trailer, I said to myself "there's going to be a car explosion and flipping cars in the movie". And sure enough, that's what was shown in the trailer. Shetty has taken criticism for his unreal "car explosion flips", and rather than tweaking it, he has made it his trademark.

Varun: Shetty makes movies for the Shetty fans which is most of the country now.

Lalit: Yes, agreed. Add SRK to the mix and you have yourself a sure-fire hit. But do you think Shetty could rake in huge box-office numbers without big-name stars?

Varun: 100%. He doesn't need stars. SRK needs him here, trust me on that. In fact all big starts need him now. He is a sure shot 100 cr. director

Lalit: I agree. This film would work without SRK, but not without Shetty. Also, Deepika. I can't say with confidence that she was the right casting choice. If we have to go by the trailer, her attempted south Indian accent was very cringworthy. She was stressing on a few words just to sound more South Indian but it just didn't feel right. Why didn't they cast someone from down south?

Varun: That's pretty animated, I would imagine it was Shetty’s instructions only for her to do that.

Lalit: But one thing is for certain, like all Shetty movies, I'm going to skip watching this in the cinema.

Varun: Deepika’s rising as a star and her performances are also improving.

Lalit: For Deepika to showcase her talent, she needs to take up more experimental roles. Roles like Chitrangada Singh's in Inkaar. All she has done up until now is commercial movies. She's done well, but I still wouldn't classify her as exceptional like I would Kareena Kapoor.

Varun: True. But she's given note worthy performances in the recent past in commercial movies too. Yes Kareena jaisi koi nahin.

Lalit: Haha, struck a chord with you there with Kareena, didn't I? Deepika might have done well, but to me, whenever I see the types of roles she takes, it's always something that she's comfortable with and knows the audience will like. For an actor, in my opinion, the career growth you show is by showing your range. She still has a lot of time for that though

Will you be watching this on the silver screen?

Varun: Not sure

Tarun: Definitely. Some people don't share the same freedom of choice as you'll.

Lalit: Hahahahahahaha

Varun: Haha

Tarun: But there's no doubt the movie is going to be complete bullshit. The same as all the other Rohit Shetty films. They even put the names of all the movies I hate in the trailer to mock me.

Lalit: Won't it just be super if you watch this twice in the cinema too?

Tarun: Ya it'll be super duper!

  1. I think Varun is right. I'm pretty sure it was SRK who reached out to Shetty and yanked him from below Ajay's nose. Shetty also would have wanted to be associated with an SRK movie (guaranteed awards, perhaps, or more recognition in the industry) and hence the move.

And yeah, sure fire hit. I liked Golmaal - the first one. That Black scene had me rolling in the aisles, but after that it's been severely downhill. Bol Bachhan was the last straw, I don't think Shetty's ever gonna make a movie that's funny. He's gonna keep regurgitating the same formula over and over, with slight variations, and keep raking in the moolah.

And the accent... it's almost as if they wanted Tamilians to be offended. It comes off as corny and campy.
