Tarun: Did you guys like the movie?
Lalit: Not in particular. I think I was
expecting a little too much. Besides, there were a lot of annoyances. I mean
lots.
Tarun: True. But I would have
overlooked all of them if the lead performances were better.
Lalit: I thought the performances were
okay. But the technicality was getting in the way of the story telling. And the
pacing was so off.
Lalit: The story failed to progress in
the first 45 minutes of the movie, and then just a few moments before the
interval, there was like a huge shift in pace. And the background score. Oh
god, it was just so mismatched. And sometimes overwhelming. Rather than
complementing the scene, it seemed to overpower it. Even scenes that didn’t
require a background score.
Tarun: I think the reason for the slow
progress in the first half was the title. If we didn't know he was going to
loot them, maybe the proceedings would have been more interesting.
Lalit: Yeah true.
Tarun: Sonakshi and Ranveer had poor
chemistry in a lot of the scenes. That was a major downer.
Lalit: Haha yeah, it's as if they
weren't supposed to have any chemistry at all.
Tarun: Agreed on the background score.
Did you notice that one of the main themes was taken from inception?
Lalit: Oh yes, I was going to say that.
It seemed so similar. Who was responsible for the score?
Tarun: I think Amit Trivedi. And if
it's him then I can understand if it's a coincidence. He doesn't get 'inspired'
that way. The entire first half I was waiting for the loot and the second half I
was waiting for the painted leaf. So in terms of story there wasn't anything
that surprised me.
Lalit: Haha, I'm going to hold my
reservations about Trivedi after this. But if you were to list the positives of
the movie, what would they be?
Tarun: The setting in the first half
was really good. I was totally immersed in the whole post independence setting.
Much of the cinematography in the first half was good, barring the grainy night
scenes. And the cast was excellent. Except the lead pair.
Lalit: Hmm..
Tarun: I also liked how the songs were
merged into the narrative. Didn't realise when they came and went. And that's
how songs should be used in films. To enhance the story.
Lalit: I'm all for this trend to
continue in Bollywood.
Tarun: Varun also didn't like Lootera?
Lalit: He was ready to walk out I
think.
Tarun: Hahahaha. He's a critic now. He
should sit through anything he chooses to watch.
Lalit: Haha yeah.
Varun: Okay guys sorry missed most of
this chat as was playing cricket, just read the whole thing now or rather
reading.
I thought
the movie was ok. Sonakshi acted well. After reading Tarun’s comments I might
have some reservations for Ranveer but I guess their chemistry was ok. What
irritated me the most were the whispers they kept on doing to seem innocent or
whatever the reason may be. No I didn’t want to walk away from the theatre this
time, I liked the break (interval) time, it keeps you wanting for more.
I agree with
Tarun, the setting was good, the costumes were really, really good. The first
shot we see Sonakshi and not even in 2 seconds we assume she is a Bengali. The
whole feel of the movie was good. Motwane definitely is a director to look out
for. I am going to have high expectations of him. Maybe he needs Kashyap as his
writer. I agree with Lalit too that the movie just pauses failing to move
forward in more than one occasion, which becomes highly irritable.
I was
watching this movie and was thinking which movie would come close or which is a
similar kind of movie which I have seen, then I remembered Hum Dil De Chuke
Sanam in which if I’m not mistaken he is the AD/Asst. Scriptwriter.
In which an
outsider comes into the girls house and all that jazz, in HDDCS there was so
much happening in each scene, the movie grabs you by the balls, and over here
the story just stops in so many places.
I like the
song 'Sawaar loon' from the album. He comes from the camp of two of the most
acclaimed filmmakers of Indian Cinema, SLB & Anurag Kashyap and I’m
expecting some good work from him. Also Udaan, I regard one of the best movies to
come out of Indian cinema. So, high hopes from Motwane’s films.
Tarun: But HDDCS was loud and hasn't
aged well. Motwane has done well to maintain a certain level of subtlety.
Varun: Yes, I agree HDDCS was loud and
probably didn’t age well but I don’t think Lootera is going to surpass that.
Tarun: And what I didn't like about Ranveer
and Sonakshi was their voices. The expressions were mostly there but the roles
required them to do something more which they didn't do.
Varun: Then it’s the director’s
responsibility who could take the best out of them. Because both acted decent,
and Sonakshi surprised me really.
Tarun: I heard Motwane made Ranveer go
through some acting workshop because Ranveer wasn't able to grasp the character
but that wasn't enough, obviously.
Varun: The director wanted to give a
poetic feel to this movie, which I think he was able to, mostly.
Tarun: The cinematography had to be
perfect for it to feel poetic and they faltered there
Varun: True. My Filmy Foodie rating is
2.
Varun’s Rating: 2 – GOOD
Tarun: Mine is between 1 and 2 and more
inclined towards 1.
Tarun’s Rating: 1 – OK
Varun: Same here bro, between 1 and 2
but id rather go with 2.
Lalit: My rating is 2 as well.
Lalit’s Rating: 2 – GOOD
FilmyFoodies Aggregate: 2 – GOOD
